Can I Deal With a Pest Problem Myself?

If caught early enough, some shop bought remedies and deep cleaning can be effective but all too often, we do not realise there is a problem until the problem has become sufficiently ingrained so that we notice, for example, seeing a rat during the day, notice fleas on the soft furnishing or waking up in the morning with a row of bites on us, indicating we may be sharing our bed with bedbugs. As a qualified pest controller, I have many methods and chemicals available for use. Many customers are concerned about the use of chemicals; be assured that I will only use the safest methods for use in and around your home and business, including areas where children and pets play. Likewise, the preservation of wildlife and the environment is a priority. I hold several specialist certificates including effective treatment of rats and mice, as well as some of the latest Rodent Proofing techniques AND, all my pest control work is insured with Public Liability Insurance (£10m) and guaranteed too.

Clothes Moths in a London Museum - February 2020

We had an interesting call a few months ago from a well known museum in Central London.  The director of the museum reported a long standing issue with Common Clothes Moths in two particular rooms where there are a number of natural fabrics that are very valuable.  The existing pest control provider had been proposing highly expensive heat treatments to the client that just did not meet there needs.  We consulted our team of specialists and the technical team at our suppliers and we're able to come up with an alternative, cost effective approach that met the clients specification. Importantly the common clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella) is one of the more aggressive species of moth.  They are small (5-8mm long) and tend to crawl around only flying when its warm.  They will avoid lighter areas and hide in dark places, laying batches of eggs on natural fibres such as wool, cottons, furs and feathers.  The larvae then go on to hatch from the eggs, spin silk like webbing into a sort of tunnel across the attacked material or fabric.  These larvae will then proceed to eat the fibres within the fabric, which causes holes in clothes, fabrics and loss of pile in carpets. The solution we were able to offer the client in this fragile environment was critically discreet and posed no risk of damage to any of the irreplaceable artefacts.  The approach was what you might describe as more passive with the longer-term solution in mind.  The product used is called Exosect Auto-confusion.  In summary, unlike more conventional pheromone traps which monitor moth numbers, Exosect is an ‘auto-confusion’ system which employs pheromones to control moths.  Using Exosect’s Entostat powder technology, Exosect uniquely produces an automatic transfer of a confusion effect in male moths. This process (auto-confusion) spreads sexual confusion throughout the male moth population thereby interrupting the mating cycle and reducing the moth population.

The client was really keen to start the treatment as quickly as possible, but unfortunately the museum was tied into a pest control service contract with the current service provider.  Unbelievably they had to give 6 months notice to exit the agreement or would be subject to excessive fees.   We are delighted to say that after 6 months the client has come back to us free of the old contract.  We started the treatment this week, which included a detailed survey of the affected areas to establish hot spots of infestation and installation of the lures (cream like tablets) inside discreet pods.  We also methodically distributed standard pheromone monitors to help assess the moth issue for both a reduction in moth numbers and identify problem areas.  This will help ensure the treatment is effective.  We have integrated this passive moth treatment as part of a pest control service agreement which includes rodent control for rats, mice and crawling insect monitoring.  This is all with no fixed term contract.  We simply deliver an exceptional service that our clients renew each quarter because they want to, not because are tied into a contract.

Drainage Fly Infestation in the West End (W1) - 20th November 2019

One of the Pestforce Pest Control West End team attended a call to a report of flies in a large office.  On investigation we quickly confirmed the flies were Sewer/Drain Flies (Psychoda).  We had to search the building for likely sources of the problem and eventually identified a sink waste bottle trap as being the problem.  We dismantled the sink unit pipework, before cleaning through all joints to remove the fly larvae and the associated feeding materials including sludge, fungi and bacteria.  We then treated the sink unit with a suitable product for water courses (PX-Viribus) to ensure any harbourage was thoroughly clean.  To deal with the adult flies that were driving staff crazy, we treated the office area using an Ultra Low Volume fog to knock the flying insects down in each room.  A light residual insecticide spray was also done in the bathroom area where the flies had been constantly seen adjacent the sink unit to help eradicate any remaining adult flies.  Its now been 7 days since we did treatment and called the client yesterday to confirm the problem was resolved.  The client was very happy and advised the flies had gone.
