Our Featured Pest of the Week – The Cockroach

The sight of a cockroach scuttling along the edge of your kitchen floor is enough to send you into a panic. Cockroaches are one of the oldest living insects on earth, with over 3,000 documented species. The good news is that in the UK, we only deal with 3 species on a regular basis – American, German and Oriental. There is very little difference between these three types, they are all more or less the same size and similar in colour.

Cockroaches, like most insect infestations, are attracted to sources of food. These tiny insects can eat a huge amount of food compared to their small body mass. In environments where there is no water – such as empty houses or other buildings – clues to their existence can be found in small, dark brown droppings or dust, usually found around edges of the room. In places where they do have access to water, you may see brown ‘smears’ on the floor or worktops. Cockroaches can prevent significant hazards to health as they spread salmonella and also coat surfaces, and any uncovered food or other equipment with an unpleasant secretion that taints food. They also emit an unpleasant musty smell. Cockroaches are nocturnal, so you may spot them fleeing to the edges of the room when a light is switched on at night. If you think you have cockroaches, don’t delay or try to deal with the problem yourself; one or two of this nuisance insects in your home can very quickly become one to two hundred.

We can successfully and quickly deal with the problem and will advise you accordingly of changes you can make to prevent future problems.
