Pest infestations can take many different formats. One example of this is the wet winters we have had recently in the UK. Whilst constant rain is a misery to use, it also causes rats and mice problems too. As well as building their nests in draught-free, dry, warm place, with a food source nearby, rodents do not like human disturbance. However, the wet weather has forced them to seek shelter in our homes – possibly the cellar – or in buildings close to our homes. Their numbers can multiply quickly which, as well as being a nuisance, they can also damage buildings and contents quickly with their constant hunt for food and nesting material.

Pests can also be introduced into the country and this is best illustrated by the super-invasive Asian plants, the Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed. Both these super-weeds present different issues:
